I knew I should have posted my weekend report sooner…

I planned on posting a weekend update yesterday, but got caught up creating a flyer for the Phoenix Down show.

And now that I am doing an update about my life, you’ll just have to trust me that I had planned what I am going to say before the **** (cow excrement – thanks Paul Shirley) hit the fan.

My weekend

Started Friday night, with beer at Carlos O’Brien’s, which was followed up with beer, pizza, and ****** (movie title that could be misconstrued as a slang female body part). ***** (a completely unrelated coworker) came over and John and I enjoyed her company.

Saturday: Went to the parents’ for the Suns game [we lost :-(], then to Mark’s new place. Had some beer and Apple something Martinis.

Sunday: Went to Mark’s again for BBQ, and had spiked Strawberry Lemonade (with Grey Goose Vodka), White Russians, Beer, and beer.

Monday: International Alcohol Day at my parents’. Had Irish Car Bombs with outdated Bailey’s. Still yummy. Had hamburgers and hot dogs, and watched the Suns game [we won :-)].

Finally, the reason for my disclaimer at the top of the post (about trusting me). I had already decided that it just wasn’t worth it. As much as I think this person is cool and nice, and that we could have some fun (read: go to a dance recital, drink Pepsi, smoke incense) for a few months, it ultimately would not be worth it. For either party. I ultimately just wanted to be a friend in a strange city, but it appears that has been shot.

Thank you very much. I appreciate it when I am told that I have violated the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. I just hope that word doesn’t get back to Tom Cruise that I talked trash about him dating Katie Holmes

I am a bad person

Yes I have, from time to time, downloaded an album that has not yet been released – via bitTorrent. I have also downloaded released albums, if only to see if I like it (but I do end up buying them if I like it). Take NIN‘s new “With Teeth” album – I thought it sucked, so I deleted it from my computer. Or take Ra‘s new album “Duality” – it is not as good as “From One“, but is a definite keeper. Given the fact that it doesn’t come out until next month, I will continue to listen to my leaked copy, but once it is available I will buy it and rip good quality versions to my iPod.

Now for the reason I am writing this post: Last night, I was able to download the new Dream Theater album, “Octavarium“. For those who don’t know my musical tastes and such, this is my favorite band. It is the band that my band looks to for inspiration (particularly due to their amazing musicianship). And even though the new album comes out in just about 10 days, I found it impossible to pass up the advanced screening.

I want to give a semi-review and attempt to not give anything away in terms of what a song could mean to a fellow DT fan. After 2 listens to the album, I can definitely say that this is not their finest work. Of course, with each listen, the songs start to grow on me more. I thought on my first listen that the album was good, but not great. And that’s to be expected when you have an album like “Scenes from a Memory” to compare everything to (it’s my personal holy grail of DT albums).

There are 3 songs in particular that got a “Holy Shit!” from me, 1 more notably than the others, but I will let you find them once listening to the album. There are a few songs on this album that I got a very strong Neal Morse vibe from. I think that Neal’s amazing writing skills are rubbing off on Mike Portnoy (considering that MP has played drums on every solo album that NM has released). And I think it’s a good thing – It really adds another depth to DT’s music.

Also, It really seems to me that they are trying to close a major chapter in their history book with this album. The titular song “Octavarium,” has some themes that make it sound like they are ready to move into the next realm of music – most likely by moving to a new record label (God, I hope they don’t break up).

Right now, I am going to give the album a 3 out of 5 stars. That is not my final verdict though. I will update you all on what I think after I have listened to the actual CD.

UPDATE: I have now listened to the album for a 3rd time, and it has raised to a 4 out of 5 stars.

BTW – I got this site HTML 4.01 Transitional compliant, so there should be no issues in either Internet Explorer or Firefox browsers. You can see the validation image in the bottom left corner of the website.

It’s a bug!

Ok, it’s not really a bug, per se, but it is something that I need to fix.

I noticed today that multiple posts for the same day show up in different “boxes” on this site (see posts from Monday, May 23rd, 2005). Not too much of an issue. I guess the problem is that the earlier post on the same date (in its separate box) does not show the date on the box header. Truthfully, I really want multiple posts on the same day to show up in the same box with a line (<hr>) separating the two posts

I guess we’ll see what I can come up with.

Also, I am aware that the site does not look right in Firefox. I will try to take a look at that as well. Stupid non-conforming-to-standards website!

First (new) Post!

Welcome to the first post of my new blog.

I have created YarshBlog using Blogger, specifically due to its template structure. These templates gave me enough leeway (for the most part) to have it look exactly as I want it to. I had some difficulties with the links from the main page to both archive pages and single post pages, so I basically had to trick the template with javascript to point to the location I wanted it to go to. Fortunately, it seems to work well. On the other hand, it also means I have to do some nifty coding in order for my RSS/Atom feed to come out properly.

Anyways, just wanted to get a new post up here for all to see. If you have any problems with the site, let me know via comments or email.

By the way, since I am using Blogger as my blogging tool, in order to post a comment you must have a blogger account.

You may see some work here…

Just an FYI – I am editing the Blogger template with enough success that I can have it be my main blog site under retro.yarsh.com.

So, that is what I am currently focused on doing. Hopefully I will be able to edit everything enough to the point that I can start using this thing permanently – at least until I am tired of blogger and decide to finally build my own blog again 🙂

I just got this

So that I can post a comment on Mark’s blog (and now John’s and Chris’). Honestly, I think it might be time for me to just build my own blog tool, or use something like SWilliams is using, and place it on my actual website – thus bring traffic to my website again.

We’ll see…

Although, it is cool to have “yarsh.blogspot.com”

My current blog resides here at xanga.
